Navigating Special Education in Alief ISD
While Alief ISD is committed to providing services, parents must remember that the IEP process is a legal negotiation. The district operates under the oversight of the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
As a parent, you are a mandatory, equal member of the ARD committee. The district has up to 45 school days from the date of parental consent to complete evaluations, and you are legally entitled to receive written notice at least five school days prior to any ARD committee meeting.
Common Early Roadblocks
Often, when a parent expresses concern, a campus will suggest placing the child in "RTI" (Response to Intervention) instead of testing for special education. RTI cannot be used to delay or deny a special education evaluation. If your child is struggling, you have the right to submit a formal written request for a Full Individual and Initial Evaluation (FIIE) immediately.
