About Special Education in Aldine ISD

Aldine ISD serves the Houston area and is committed to providing a high-quality special education program for students with disabilities. As a district operating under the oversight of TEA Region 4, Aldine ISD adheres to all state and federal regulations regarding special education services. The district strives to create inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive.

Navigating the special education process can sometimes feel overwhelming. In Aldine ISD, after a referral for special education services, the district has 45 school days to complete a Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE). Once the FIE is complete, parents will receive a written notice at least five school days prior to the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meeting. This meeting is where the IEP (Individualized Education Program) is developed, if the student is eligible for services.

Common Questions from Aldine ISD Families

What if I disagree with the ARD committee's decisions?

You have the right to disagree with the ARD committee's decisions. In Aldine ISD, you can document your disagreement in the ARD meeting notes. You can also pursue options such as mediation or a complaint investigation through the Texas Education Agency.

How can I get more involved in my child's special education program?

Aldine ISD encourages parent involvement! Attend ARD meetings prepared with questions and information. Communicate regularly with your child's teachers and special education staff. Consider joining the district's Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) if one exists, to share your experiences and provide feedback.

My child needs assistive technology. How does Aldine ISD handle that?

Assistive technology needs are determined by the ARD committee based on the FIE and your child's individual needs. Aldine ISD provides a range of assistive technology options to support students with disabilities. Your ARD committee will discuss the appropriate technology and training requirements for your child.

Practical Tip for Parents

Aldine ISD is a large district, serving approximately 67,000 students. If you have questions or concerns about your child's special education services, start by contacting the Special Education Campus Coordinator at your child's school. These coordinators are dedicated to supporting students with disabilities on their respective campuses and are often the most knowledgeable point of contact before escalating concerns to the district level.
