How to Effectively Contact Houston ISD Special Education Staff

Communicating effectively with Houston ISD special education staff is crucial for your child's success. Here's how to make the most of your interactions:

Best Times to Contact: Typically, the best times to reach teachers and campus staff are before or after school hours. Consider emailing to schedule a phone call.

Email vs. Phone: Email is often the preferred method for initial contact. It allows staff to review your concerns and prepare a thoughtful response. Phone calls are better for urgent matters or detailed discussions.

What to Say in Your First Message: Be clear and concise. State your child's name, school, teacher's name (if applicable), and a brief summary of your concern. For example: "My child, [Child's Name], is a student in [Teacher's Name]'s [Grade Level] class at [School Name]. I am writing to discuss [briefly state the issue]."

Important Tip: Always follow up phone conversations with a written summary (email is fine) to document the discussion and any agreed-upon actions. This creates a clear record.

What to Do If You Can't Reach Anyone

If you're having trouble getting in touch with Houston ISD staff, here's a suggested escalation path:

Remember that Texas Education Code Chapter 29 outlines the rights and responsibilities related to special education services in Texas. Familiarize yourself with these provisions.

Your Right to District Records

You have the right to access your child's educational records. Here's how:

FERPA: Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), you have the right to inspect and review your child's education records within 45 days of submitting a written request to Houston ISD.

Public Information Act: The Texas Public Information Act (Texas Government Code Chapter 552) grants you the right to request information from government entities, including staff contact information. However, personally identifiable information may be redacted.

Submitting a Records Request: Submit your records request in writing to the designated records custodian for Houston ISD. The Houston ISD website should provide information on how to do this. Be specific about the records you are requesting to ensure a timely and accurate response.
