Humble ISD serves the Houston area and is committed to providing a high-quality special education program for students with disabilities. The district operates under the oversight of the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Region 4, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. Humble ISD aims to create inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive.
The Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process is a cornerstone of special education in Humble ISD. Following a referral for special education services, the district has up to 45 school days to complete a Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE). Once the FIE is completed, parents will receive a written notice at least 5 school days prior to the ARD committee meeting. This meeting is where eligibility for special education is determined and an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed, if appropriate.
Common Questions from Humble ISD Families
My child is struggling in class. How do I start the process of getting them evaluated for special education?
The first step is to contact your child's teacher or the school principal. Explain your concerns and ask about the possibility of a referral for special education evaluation. The school will then initiate the evaluation process, including gathering data and observations about your child's academic performance and behavior.
What if I disagree with the ARD committee's decision?
You have the right to disagree with the ARD committee's decisions. You can request another ARD meeting to discuss your concerns further. If you still disagree, you have options such as mediation or filing a complaint with the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
How can I be more involved in my child's IEP?
Attend all ARD meetings prepared to share your insights and concerns about your child's needs. Review the IEP regularly, and don't hesitate to communicate with your child's teachers and special education staff throughout the year. Your input as a parent is crucial to the success of your child's IEP.
