How to Effectively Contact Lewisville ISD Special Education Staff

Communicating effectively with Lewisville ISD special education staff is crucial for your child's success. Keep in mind that teachers and staff are often busiest during the school day. The best times to contact them are typically before or after school hours, or during their designated planning periods. Check your teacher’s syllabus or contact the front office for planning period times.

Email is often the most efficient way to initially reach staff, allowing them to review your concerns and gather information before responding. When emailing, be clear and concise in your subject line (e.g., "IEP Question for [Child's Name]"). In your first message, briefly explain your concern and what you hope to achieve. For example: "My child, [Child's Name], is struggling with [specific skill] in math. Could we schedule a time to discuss strategies?" Phone calls can be helpful for more complex issues or urgent matters, but it’s always a good practice to follow up any phone conversation with a written summary via email for your records.

Important Tip: Always follow up a phone call with an email summarizing the conversation and any agreed-upon actions. This creates a written record of your communication.

What to Do If You Can't Reach Anyone

If you're having trouble reaching someone in Lewisville ISD's special education department, it's important to escalate your concerns systematically. Here's a suggested process:

Your Right to District Records

As a parent of a child receiving special education services in Lewisville ISD, you have the right to access your child's educational records. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Lewisville ISD has 45 days to respond to your written request for records.

You also have the right to access public information, including staff contact information, under the Texas Public Information Act (Texas Government Code, Chapter 552). To request records, submit a written request to the Lewisville ISD records custodian. Your request should be specific and clearly identify the records you are seeking. Include your name, contact information, and your child's name and school. Keep a copy of your request for your records.
